Nostalgia is a stealthy animal. It sits hidden away until something lures it out. Music is a big one for me. And smells. Smells can trigger so many vivid memories. Popcorn reminds me of the drive-in theater and dad's old Volkswagen hatchback. Cinnamon comforts me like mom's sick-day cinnamon toast. And sautéed onions and garlic…I close my eyes and I swear I'm standing in my grandparents' kitchen.
The beauty of nostalgia is that it's a photograph in your mind of an actual experience. It's a fraction of time that you have somehow managed to capture and archive, waiting to be relived at any given moment.
